Artist-Teacher Complex

"Much of education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants."
 -John Gardner

I was born an artist but evolved to be a teacher. This is what I coined the "artist-teacher complex"--the constant interplay of artist and teacher dispositions. I am never fully one without with other, which I attribute to being born in the suburbs, raised on a ranch, having lived in a city, and then finding solace in a small town.

I earned my BA in painting at San Francisco State University in 2008 and received my teaching credential at California State University, Chico in 2012. All the while, I have been working on a life-altering series of portraits as a culmination of my past; twenty-four years of thought encapsulated into twenty-four portraits. As an artist-teacher, I am simultaneously pursuing my dream of following in my mother’s footsteps as an educator, and communicating my most personal ideas to the world through teaching and painting.
